What Did Wolfgang Mozart Say?

wolfgang_amadeus_mozart___pop_art_by_guillezeus-d621spd“Lick me in the ass,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart once said in the six-voice canon he composed in 1782. “Leck mich im Arsh” was the original title of his scatological hit, which included a resounding chorus of “lick me in the ass, quickly, quickly” before his publishers cleaned up the language and retitled the song to “Laßt froh uns sein,” or “Let us be glad.”

But any attempts to censor Wolfie were futile: his potty mouth would live on in other recreational compositions, which he’d perform over drinks with his closest buddies. And though it was originally attributed to him, Mozart may have inspired one of his contemporaries Wenzel Trnka to compose a similar jam titled, “Leck mir den Arsch fein recht schön sauber” or, “Lick my ass nice and clean.”

mozart-glassesThere was a time when Mozart’s operas were a little bit raunchy, satirical, and perhaps most importantly, relevant. Somewhere along the lines, the classical genre was crystallized by ornate set designs and steep ticket prices, leaving behind its context to become an elitist vehicle and a student’s least favorite class trip.

New and modern teams of artists are creating opera spaces that more closely resembles the original ideas. They have breathed life into what had become a stagnant art form, allowing opera to once again become funny, frivolous, but also forward thinking.

Heartbeat Opera is changing that. Blending the music of opera with the aesthetics of drag, this team of artists created an opera space that more closely resembles the original. They breathe life into what had become a stagnant art form, allowing opera to once again become funny, frivolous, but also forward thinking.

There’s nothing like the powdered wig era to remind us that today’s gender norms. Some of Heatbeat Opera’s past winning season were shows with these vicarious titles.

  • Queens of the Night: Mozart in Space
  • Lucia di Lammermoor
  • Dido & Aeneas
  • Heartbeat on the High Line
  • Miss Handel
  • Kafka-Fragments
  • Daphnis & Chloé
  • The Fairy Queen

From the start of the artform, “there was a fluid conception of gender and the possibility of men playing women and women playing men, but in all kinds of shades of what that would mean.

All I insist on, and nothing else, is that you should show the whole world that you are not afraid. Be silent, if you choose; but when it is necessary, speak—and speak in such a way that people will remember it.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I pay no attention whatever to anybody’s praise or blame. I simply follow my own feelings.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

If only the whole world could feel the power of harmony.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

As death, when we come to consider it closely, is the true goal of our existence. I have formed during the last few years such close relations with this best and truest friend of mankind, that his image is not only no longer terrifying to me, but is very soothing and consoling! I thank my God for graciously granting me the opportunity of learning that death is the key which unlocks the door to our true happiness.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Silence is very important. The silence between the notes are as important as the notes themselves.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Whoever is most impertinent has the best chance.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Music is my life and my life is music. Anyone who does not understand this is not worthy of God.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

People err who think my art comes easily to me. I assure you, dear friend, nobody has devoted so much time and thought to compositions as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not industriously studied through many times.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I have never written the music that was in my heart to write; perhaps I never shall with this brain and these fingers, but I know that hereafter it will be written; when instead of these few inlets of the senses through which we now secure impressions from without, there shall be a flood of impressions from all sides; and instead of these few tones of our little octave, there shall be an infinite scale of harmonies – for I feel it – I am sure of it. This world of music, whose borders even now I have scarcely entered, is a reality, is immortal.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

To talk well and eloquently is a very great art, but that an equally great one is to know the right moment to stop.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I choose such notes that love one another.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Music must never offend the ear, but must please the listener, or, in other words, must never cease to be music.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Forgive me, Majesty. I am a vulgar man! But I assure you, my music is not.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

If people could see into my heart, I should almost feel ashamed – all there is cold, cold as ice.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
