From Rock, Rap and, Reality Stars to Hollywood Royalty! Why are the rich and famous flocking out west to cities like Hidden Hills and Calabasas!
Louie B Mayer once said his MGM studios had more stars than there were in the heavens. One big question was and is – where do these heavenly bodies reside?
In the early days of tinsel-town, the neighborhood address for your average big silent movie star was either Hollywoodland or for those with style and a filled-to-the-top pocket book a little area known as Hancock Park.
Your home was not only your calling card and a status symbol but acted as a barometer of how well your Hollywood career was going. The bigger the house, the bigger your ego. You get the idea.
Hollywood was innocent in those days. In many cases, you could walk right up to the front door and ask for an autograph. Who knows, you might have gotten lucky.
Drop by Jack Warner’s if you can get past the guard and the dogs for a cup of his famous hospitality or make an appointment to meet your neighbor Clara Bow. She loved meeting young male admirers. Cecile De Demille’s estate is just a few mansions down on the right so why not stop by and discuss the Ten Commandments. Hancock Park with its tree lined estates has been and continues to be an address to impress.
As Hollywood grew up, the stars of television and the big screen loaded up the trucks and moved to Beverly ………Hills that is swimming pools and yes movie stars. Big Game hunters began stalking the Hollywood celebrities with bus loads of tourist driving by every hour all day long, day after day. You could also buy a map to the stars’ homes on just about any corner. In one case, a Hollywood actor got lost, could not find his new home and bought a stars map just to see where his new house was located. You can still buy a map to the star’s homes although most of the stars represented are long gone.
Celebrities walled themselves up as the need for security became ever more evident. As the gilded cages became bigger and more extravagant, the move to Bel Air and Beverly Park became the trend. With the average home price exceeding 30 million USD, these estates resembled more of a theme park and less of a home on the range.
In early 2010, a new trend started emerging, the return of the home. Remember when the suburbs were a place to run from? Not anymore! It’s all about the Burbs Baby!
The now rich and famous avoid the pestering and unforgiving paparazzi like a call from the IRS. The “IN” crowd began looking for a more simple life and place to build their humble million dollar abodes.
Welcome to Hidden Hills
Hidden Hills is a city and gated community in Los Angeles County, California. It is located next to the city of Calabasas and is located in the west of San Fernando Valley. According to the United States Census Bureau, Hidden Hills has a median household income of $203,199. No families and no individuals were below the poverty line. In 2011 and 2012, it was the richest “Place” in the United States, followed by Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The community was designed and developed in the 1950s by A.E. Hanson, a renowned Southern California landscape architect and planned community developer. His earlier projects included Rolling Hills and Palos Verdes Estates, and the 1920s Beverly Hills Harold Lloyd Estate ‘Greenacres.’
Hidden Hills is a gated residential community with a total all land area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2). An elementary school is publicly accessible at one of the three gates to the community. The city has a summer camp for children, community and children’s theatre programs, annual parades, carnivals, parties, welcome wagon, snow days, and weekly community-wide barbecues all summer long.
Hidden Hills is bordered on the north by the nature reserve and greenbelt of the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, a park with miles of equestrian, hiking, and mountain biking trails.
Hidden Hills has a tranquility most gated communities do not have. Another thing Hidden hills has is a robust amount of celebrities. It is almost a phenomenon.
To fully understand Hidden Hills, we contacted one of Hidden Hills top agents, Andrea Yates of “The Agency”. Known as the guru of Hidden Hills, Andrea is part of the magic that makes up this wonderland. She gives us a brief insider’s knowledge of life in paradise.“Over my expansive and exciting real estate career many of my local, international and out of state clients have been drawn to the allure of Hidden Hills. Most hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrity and wanting to see where they live as many do that flock to LA on vacation. But in Calabasas and Hidden Hills you can’t, it’s impossible to get through the gates unless you are invited, on the list or a resident. It’s a private community only 20 or so miles from the city and minutes to the beach and everything else. And there you have it, most of Calabasas and all of Hidden Hills is quite frankly, HIDDEN from the prying eyes of the paparazzi, Hollywood tours buses and neatly packaged behind the guard gates and maximum security.”
“If Beverly Hills was the previous benchmark, Hidden Hills and Calabasas area have in modern times replaced it. The celebrity buyer has become more international and sophisticated. They want more especially when they are spending on average 8 and 9 figures for estate properties. The Hidden Hills and Calabasas demographic is definitely younger and free from the conventional class restraint which is typical Beverly Hills. A $20 million Hidden Hills Property would easily be a $50 million dollar Beverly Hills Estate without the security and land to substantiate the knee buckling prices.”
“It’s an idyllic country setting located about 25 miles from the city and just over the hill to Malibu. It is a place where the rich and famous just want their privacy and raise their family and with Hidden Hills, they can obtain it.” A place to breathe some fresh air and relax, go for a run, go for a walk with your kids, a place free from the gridlock of the city, prying eyes, the ever growing homeless population, the crime, the grime, the game, the insane. A place where properties are not on top of each other, a place where you can just have space. Space to collect your thoughts, space to just be normal if there is such a thing now.
Being fortunate to move to the prestigious community behind the gates is moving to a hidden piece of paradise. It’s a small very exclusive community with some of the most beautiful estates in all of California. It maintains it rural, old country place where properties are not on top of each other, a place where you can just have space. Space to collect your thoughts, space to just be normal if there is such a thing now. Being fortunate to move to the prestigious community behind the gates is moving to a hidden piece of paradise. “Unfortunately, Hidden Hills and the Calabasas area has had more notoriety from a certain reality show family. Britney Spears once had a home in Hidden Hills. Justin Bieber who purchased Eddie Murphy’s ex, Nicole Murphy’s estates, one of our old listings was located in The Oaks, one of the newer guard gated communities offering top level security with even more monitored gated inside the gates for an area called the “Upper Oaks” which high 7 and 8 figures mansions. Seemingly, Bieber succumbed to the neighbors’ pressure and sold his property to Kourtney Kardashian.”
Hidden Hills even had a Royal Highness purchase a palatial estate to spend a whopping 15 days there.
These exclusive communities draw a certain type of buyer (celebrity) whose wealth is in itself a performance. New Money is rampant in Calabasas and Hidden Hills. There is a big self-perpetuation factor going on, if it’s good enough for them, it’s definitely good enough for me.
The Calabasas and Hidden Hills style has been morphing from the California coastal Italian architectural style associated with wealth to the more traditional modern and Cape Cod Hamptons style as well as some spectacular customs.
For the curious, here is the short list of past and current celebs gracing Hidden Hills.
Here are just a few:
Rebecca Romijn/Jerry O’Connell
AMPAS President Tom Sherak
Miramax owner Ron Tutor
Drake (yeah Canada)
Eddie Cibrian/LeAnn Rimes
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Ozzy Osborne & Sharon Osborne
