The swimming legend ended his run in the Summer Olympic games in Rio with a 23rd Gold medal.
In the final event, the 4×100-meter medley relay, Phelps swam the butterfly third leg of a tight race, pushing the US from second behind Great Britain up to first before freestyle specialist Nathan Adrian raced home for gold in an Olympic record time of three minutes 27.95 seconds.
Phelps has finished these Rio Games with five gold medals and one silver.
His career total of 28 Olympic medals include 23 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze.
Spanning Olympic games stretching over 16 years, his fifth win at Rio brought him his 23rd gold medal. His other gold medal finishes at Rio were in the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle, 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley.
Though he’s looked spectacular at age 31, Phelps has insisted this week that he does not plan on coming back to swim in Tokyo in 2020. He says that while this phase of his swimming career is over, he is ready to step into a new direction, although he has not said just what that will be.
Less than an hour before Phelp’s final race, the women’s 4x100m relay medley team made the USA the first to win 1,000 gold medals at the Summer Olympics.
In recognition of Phelps’ incredible talent and achievements, the internet was active in honoring the legend.
