The news came courtesy of gossip columnist Liz Smith, who included the news in a recap of New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.”
Jennifer Allen, Lily Tomlin’s rep, confirmed that the actress and comedian and her partner of 42 years, Jane Wagner, were married in a private ceremony in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve.
With marriage equality now the standard in California, it’s wonderful to see Lily & Jane able to legalize their 42 year commitment.
Says Lily, “You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice.” “Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very, very happy about it.”
Wagner, 78, was born and raised in Morristown, Tennessee. Tomlin, 74, is from Detroit. The couple met in March of 1971 when the two collaborated on Tomlin’s comedy album when Tomlin was looking for help to develop the character of the wicked child Edith Ann.
The couple’s many celebrated collaborations, written by Wagner, include Tomlin’s Tony-winning one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which played on Broadway, toured and was filmed for the screen, as well as the movie The Incredible Shrinking Woman.
While many try to malign Hollywood couples as hopping from one relationship to another, and more so for gay and lesbian relationships, it’s quite heartwarming to celebrate a couple who quietly have spent 42 years together, and counting.
Congratulations and best wishes to the marvelous couple.
