Man of Steel director Zack Snyder set superhero fans in a frenzy at Comic-Con in San Diego.
At Saturday morning’s Warner Bros/Man of Steel panel at Comic-Con, moderator Chris Hardwick had Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and star Henry Cavill on stage.
In the final moments of the panel, Snyder took the lectern from Hardwick and announced:
“It’s official that we are going to make another Superman movie. And you say, Zack, what is the movie about? But you don’t want me to tell you that. You want to go and see the movie. But I can say that maybe there’s a single element that will be in the film that I could… help you out with. I was thinking about how to do that. I pored through the DC Universe to look for a way to tell this thing. We’re writing the thing now, but I came across a thing I found that’ll help you understand it.”
With that, Man of Steel actor Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) joined the stage to read what turned out to be the big reveal.
“I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.”
Following that passage from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns (that’s Batman speaking to Superman from the end of Miller’s story), the screen behind the stage changed to illuminate a graphic showing the Superman symbol positioned with the Batman logo. The Hall then erupted.
Snyder was careful to say that they weren’t adapting Miller’s 1986 miniseries, but said the Dark Knight Returns passage will help “tell you something” about the upcoming film.
A press release followed, announcing that Zack Snyder will direct the as-yet unnamed film. It will combine the Man of Steel’s actors with an unknown Batman cast. Snyder and David S. Goyer will write the film’s script, with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas serving as executive producers. The film is expected to begin shooting next summer, with a summer 2015 release date.
“I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter,” Snyder said in a press release. “Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”
“Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe,” added Diane Nelson, president, DC Entertainment, also in the press release.
