MTV held the 2013 Video Music Awards (VMAs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, Sunday with much anticipated performances by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Robin Thicke and a special performance by Justin Timberlake who was reunited with his former *NSYNC boy band members.

Lady Gaga opened the show with a colorful, multi-costume-changing performance of her new single “Applause.”  Starting out in an all white nun outfit, she went through several more changes on stage all while singing, until slipping backstage and coming out in a seashell bikini to end the song to a standing ovation.

Robin Thicke joined Miley Cyrus singing his top of the charts hit Blurred Lines, with antics and grindings by Miley that caused a lot of heated talk on Twitter.

Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert performed Same Love, took home the award for ‘Best Video with a Social Message’. Jennifer Hudson joined them during the performance, which talks about legalizing same-sex marriage. After collecting his Moonman, Macklemore spoke of writing songs since he was 15 and that “this is the most important out of all of them.” He went on to call the award a “testament to what is happening right now in America on the forefront of equality. Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation,” he said.
